After 6 months since the last time I wrote a blog post, I felt it was time to sit and write a post about something. The mighty bike is still a very important aspect of my life (almost 12 years on the streets!) and I always have new ideas or bike trips or thoughts to write about. Hopefully, this will last for a very long time!
So, here in the big city, I have to cover a decent distance 3 times a week while carrying a bag full of Judo gear . I don’t like to carry the bag on my back and having it strapped on the rack is not safe (one time it fell off behind me and I didn’t realize it until I was back home – I had to go all the way back looking for it ). So, I experimented a bit and found a very easy and safe way to secure it on the rack. It works great with all kinds of Gym kind of bags.
You ‘ll need:
A plank of wood (a bit bigger than your rack)
Wire
Polyester Rope
Wooden stick
Drill
1. This is how it looks from the top. You can see the wires securing the plank on the rack. You can look for the article I wrote “The Plank”. It’s a very useful hack!
2. A close up. I made the holes for the rope small enough to unable the rope from sliding down the hole.
3. From the bottom side you can see the wire twisted ends and the knots of the rope.
4.This is the interesting part, I call this thing ‘The wrapper’. It works like bungee cord but it simplerand you can make one yourself if you have a rope. It is just a rope with a small stick on each side (just drill a hole in the middle of the sticks and make the rope ends go through them). Make the stick go throgh the loop of your plank and now pull outwards to test it.
5. This is how it looks in action.
6. You only have to calculate how much rope you need for your bag. I don’t thing it should be VERY tight, just enough. You ‘hook’ the first end in one of the first loops and then strap the bag making a ‘Z’ as you see here and on the next pic/sketch.
Nice to see this update the your earlier post “The plank” and again very practical, I do not use my bicycle rack too much, but when I use it I notice it is too narrow, so I should try something like this.
Interesting city, I read there was snow in Athens recently…
Yes, … hopefully, this will last for a very long time!
Hello Mike! Nice to see you are still around 🙂
Yes, it is very useful! It’s truly practical. I ‘d definitely recommend making a plank. But I use the rack almost every day, maybe it’s not very useful to you.
Athens is interesting indeed. It’s really chaotic, dirty and loud but it never sleeps. It’s difficult to find a more crazy city in Europe I think. If you ever decide to visit it, I will gladly show you around!
